Eric Singer (Alice Cooper, Kiss, Badlands) Interview Jan 2004

Looking back at this interview:

Eric had already been in and out of Kiss a couple of times. When the band reunited with all original members in 1996, Eric was out. In 2000, Singer started working with Alice Cooper during the Brutal Planet era. He rejoined Kiss after Peter Criss exited the band from 2001-2002. Peter came back to Kiss in late 2002. At the time of this interview Eric was back in Alice Cooper’s band. He had most recently performed on the 2003 Alice Cooper album The Eyes of Alice Cooper and subsequent tour. One the first things that is noticeable is there aren’t a whole lot of questions compared to our other interviews. Quite honestly, we weren’t even sure if we would be able to get a hold of Eric so we just emailed a few questions. He was kind enough to take some time out of his busy schedule and answer them almost immediately.

Black Sabbath

What has been your biggest career challenge?

Just surviving this whole business on a day in / day out basis

What band offered you more freedom musically?
What did you add to the creative process?

Probably Badlands since it was “our” own music & we had to write & create.
I think I added a gear in the machinery that was a band sound

Why did you leave Badlands?

I was fired do to business differences
that was a blessing in disguise

How would you describe your role in Kiss?

Drummer /vocalist/team player/survivalist

Black Sabbath was very unstable when you came on board. Can you describe your Sabbath experience?

I was very young & “green”. It taught me a lot about the business side of things.
I really liked the music & Tony Iommi is a great player/writer. Sadly I was in the right place at the wrong time

Entertainment (most fans are not drummers).
Give people something to latch on to so they can clap along or stomp their feet

Alice is great ! Soooo easy to work with & for.
He likes it hard & heavy ya just gotta drive the band & him.

Political correctness but, mostly understanding my role in each situation I am in
although I sometimes can’t help saying what I really feel

Looking at the music videos you’ve been in. What’s your favorite clip and which one is your least favorite? What do you remember about making each of the two clips?

Favorite was Gary Moore Live in Stockholm 1987.
It was a great time for me & music / great band/ great learning time.
Least fav: Badlands.
ALL the videos were poorly done & wasted so much money ugh !

What was your “Spinal Tap” moment?

Pretending to hang myself during soundcheck w/Alice Cooper on 1990 Trash Tour in Atlanta and having the drum stool slip out under me & actually choking myself & really almost hanging myself ! What a dope I was. (LOL)
I had a rope burn & neck bruise for a week !!
